NAVAIR and NAVSEA Managed is a branch of the U.S. Department of Defense that oversees the organization of the Navy’s materiel for Air (NAVAIR) and Sea (NAVSEA) systems.
NAVAIR (Naval Air Systems Command) provides material support for aircraft and airborne weapons systems for the US Navy. established in 1966, NAVAIR’s mission is to provide full life-cycle support of naval aviation aircraft, weapons, and systems, operated by sailors and marines. This includes research, design, development, and systems engineering, acquisition, test and evaluation, training facilities, logistical support, and more. NAVAIR is divided into eight competencies: program management, contracts, research and engineering, test and evaluation, logistics and industrial operations, corporate operations, comptroller, and counsel.
NAVSEA (Naval Sea Systems Command) is the largest of the Navy’s system commands, consisting of four shipyards, ten warfare centers, four major shipbuilding locations, and NAVSEA headquarters. NAVSEA’s primary objective is to engineer, build, and support the US Navy’s fleet of ships and combat systems. It accounts for 25% of the Navy’s entire budget.
