About Hewlett Packard IncHewlett-Packard was originally founded by electrical engineers Bill Hewlett and David Packard on August 18th, 1947 in Palo Alto, California. Prior to this, they had worked part-time in a rented garage since 1938. Their first successful project was a precision audio oscillator, the Model HP200A. By 1951, Hewlett-Packard reached $5.5 million in sales, and had 215 employees.
HP is recognized as one of the founding companies of Silicon Valley, beginning its semiconductor development in the 1960s, which were used in instruments and calculators. During the 1960s, HP partnered with Sony and Yokogawa Electronics to develop products, and in 1966 entered the computer market with the HP 2100/ HP 1000 series of minicomputers. Two years later, HP introduced what is now recognized as the first personal computer, the Hewlett-Packard 9100A. HP would go on to develop several other firsts, such as the first handheld scientific electronic calculator, the first handheld programmable calculator, and the first symbolic and graphing calculator.
By the 1980s, HP’s sales had reached $6.5 billion, and had more than 85,000 employees. In 1984, HP introduced inkjet and laser printers to accompany its desktop computers, which incorporated technology and techniques from other companies like Canon Inc. and Xerox to convert data into dots for printing. In the 1990s, HP expanded its computer product line, which had focused primarily on universities, research, and business users, to include consumers, as well as focusing on acquisitions like Apollo Computers in 1989 and Convex Computer in 1995. HP also opened its online store, hpshopping.com. In 1999, all businesses not related to computers, storage, or imaging were spun off from HP to form Agilent Technologies, in what was the largest IPO in the history of Silicon Valley.
In May of 2002, HP merged with Compaq, a competitor in the computer industry, and became a major player in the desktops, laptops, and servers markets. Throughout the 2000s, HP continued to launch new products such as desktops, notebooks, workstations, and the software to support them. HP also continued to acquire other companies, such as Electronic Data Systems in August 2008, and 3Com in November 2009. A series of messy executive decisions, mass layoffs, and upper management hirings and firings, marked the late 2000s/early 2010s, however, and HP struggled to respond to the market shift towards smartphones, tablets, and mobile devices.
On October 6, 2014, Hewlett-Packard announced it would split into two separate companies, separating the personal computer and printers business from its technology services. One year later, Hewlett-Packard changed its name to HP Inc, and spun off Hewlett Packard Enterprise as a separate and new publicly traded company. HP Inc. retains Hewlett-Packard’s stock price history and ticker symbol.
