About Gentex Corporation

Gentex Corporation is a manufacturer of military, special forces, commercial, law enforcement, emergency medical services and First Responder PPE products, as well as aluminized fabrics, Lifetex Fabrics, Clearweld, Filtron, and Precision Polymer Processors. The company began in 1894 in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, originally known as the Klots Throwing Company. During WWI, the company manufactured silk cartridge bags for the US military. However, when Rayon was introduced as an alternative to silk, and the Great Depression began, Klots was forced into bankruptcy. The company was purchased and reorganized in 1932, at which point the company’s name was changed to General Textile Mills. The company saw steady growth through this time. During World War II, General Textile Mills began producing equipment such as parachutes, composite parachute boxes, and hard shell helmets.

The company changed its name to Gentex in 1958 and continues working on helmet technologies. To meet the need for oxygen-breathing pilot equipment, Gentex purchased Protection, Inc., a helmet manufacturer in Pomona, California, and began producing respiratory products. Protection, Inc. eventually became the official west coast location of Gentex in 1981, adopting the name Gentex Western Operations. Since this time, the company has continued to grow through multiple acquisitions, and continued to innovate in helmet technology. Today, the company is based in Simpson, Pennsylvania.
