Parker Hannifin Corporation, commonly known as Parker, is an American corporation specializing in motion and control technologies. The company was founded in 1917 and is one of the largest companies in the field of motion control technologies in the world. They operate in a variety of industries such as aerospace, climate control, electromechanics, filtration, fluid and gas handling, hydraulics, pneumatics, process control, sealing, and shielding. When the company began in 1917, Parker Appliance Company was a manufacturer of pneumatic brake systems for buses, trucks, and trains. A 1919 accident caused the company to lose nearly all of its inventory, and did not operate again until 1924.
In 1927, the company expanded into aviation. Parker parts were used by Charles Lindbergh’s aircraft the Spirit of St. Louis, which crossed the Atlantic Ocean. The company experienced a major boom during WWII when they served as the USAF’s primary supplier of valves and fluid connectors. In 1957, the company purchased Hannifin, a manufacturer of valve and cylinder products, and changed its name to Parker Hannifin. Economic struggle forced the company to broaden its horizons in the 1970s, with Parker Hannifin expanding into the automotive aftermarket. The company also bolstered its aerospace growth at this time. The company’s aerospace division, Parker Aerospace, designs and manufactures aerospace hydraulic equipment such as fuel system components and high-temperature bleed valves.
