What is a Reciprocating Engine Generator

While many are familiar with the wind turbines, nuclear power plants, steam turbines, and other power generation methods that produce electricity that we as a society depend upon, some may not be familiar with the reciprocating engine generator and the role it plays. While similar to the reciprocating engines that benefit aircraft, reciprocating engine generators are responsible for power generation and serve a major role in ensuring consistent grid powering. With the flexibility and capabilities offered by the reciprocating engine, they can serve as beneficial apparatuses for a number of power generation applications.

Unlike steam turbines and other engine types that require specific forms of fuel or force to drive their generators, the reciprocating engine generator is much more flexible in its use. Generally, such engine generators can use diesel, propane, natural gas, or gasoline in order to supply an electrical generator with the mechanical force necessary to create electricity. Coupled with dependable responsiveness, a reciprocating engine can meet high-demand periods through its ability to achieve incremental peaking power. Additionally, reciprocating engines can also be used to flatten the ups and downs of various variable-output sources such as solar panels and wind turbines. With their ability to quickly be set up and their rapid pace of starting power generation, such apparatuses can serve for backup generation in the occurrence of a grid outage.

With their various offered capabilities, the reciprocating engine generator can improve grid efficiency for the benefit of many. During the peak of summer when energy demands are often at their highest, local and regional grids can quickly become strained which leads to less reliable grid powering and higher costs for operations and billing. If there are select customers or groups of customers that require more power during a peak, reciprocating engines can serve to reduce the strain on the central grid through their power generation. Even if temporary, such apparatuses can mitigate the chance of an outage when powering is most needed.

Beyond assisting power grids for stress reduction and backup, reciprocating engines have also found much use in combined heat and power plants. During the operation of a reciprocating engine, exhaust serves as a byproduct that can be used for various applications. Within combined heat and power plants, the heat from exhaust is harnessed to heat and cool buildings, rather than having it be expelled into the atmosphere as waste. Through this use of exhaust gases, such plants can increase their energy efficiency and reduce total carbon dioxide emissions at the same time.

For a reciprocating engine to generate power, they rely on the expansion of combustion gases to drive pistons. The four-stroke reciprocating engine is one of the most common types for power generation, and the four stroke process consists of taking in air, compressing it with fuel, igniting the resulting mixture, and expelling spent gases. As the pistons fire off linearly from fuel and air ignition, the resulting force can be transformed into a circular motion by a crankshaft to create power. To ignite the fuel and air mixtures within cylinders or the combustion chamber, spark plug components are used to transfer electricity and produce an ignition. With this set of standard operations, one can see how reciprocating engines for power generation are fairly similar to their aircraft counterparts such as the baffle airflow aircraft reciprocating engine or turbosupercharger aircraft reciprocating engine.
