About Hitachi
Hitachi’s story began in 1910 when electrical engineer Namihei Odaira founded the company with their first product being Japan’s first 4-kilowatt (5 hp) induction motor. Beginning as an in house venture of Fusanosuke Kuhara's mining company in Hitachi, Ibaraki, Odaira’s company eventually moved to Tokyo where years later, it underwent several drastic changes as a result of reconstruction efforts from World War II. In 1949, Hitachi went public and ten years later in 1959, Hitachi America, Ltd was established. Hitachi officially stopped producing televisions in 2012 and later that year acquired the UK based nuclear energy company Horizon Nuclear Power. Hitachi and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries merged thermal power energy businesses into a joint venture with 35% going to Hitachi and the remainder going to the latter. Currently Hitachi is known worldwide as a multinational conglomerate operating in eleven business segments, those being railway & urban systems, electronic systems & equipment information & telecommunication systems, social infrastructure, high functional materials & components, financial services, power systems, automotive systems, digital media & consumer products, construction machinery and other components & systems.
